Activities

As a Group, we have the capabilities to support scouting with traditional skills as well as more modern themes. So anything ranging from Lighting a fire & backwoods cooking, through Pioneering & backpacking to online safety could be on the programme.

Across the Leaders of our Group, and our associated Explorer unit Pegasus, we have a strong and wide set of skills & experiences that we try to pass onto all our leaders and Young People – Learning never ends.

Many of the more adventurous activities require either scout permits, or external qualifications, & we are very fortunate to have a lot capabilities internally (supporting other groups when needed). Other people in the District & County have different capabilities to call upon. As a Group/Pegasus, these include

  • Nights away – camping/Greenfield (NA is a pretty standard requirement for any groups to camp!)
  • Air rifle shooting
  • Archery/crossbows
  • Artificial structure climbing & Abseiling (climbing walls)
  • Scout Terrain T1 summer Supervisor (basically hills between 500 & 800 m)
  • Scout Terrain T2 summer Leader (basically hills/mountains over 800 m)
  • NNAS Tutor & NNAS Silver award
  • Scout Artificial structure climbing/Abseil Permit (Climbing walls)

We are also hoping to add water activities to this list soon.

DofE

In addition to all the other activities we undertake & Activity permits/|Qualifications we hold across the Group, a number of our own Leaders are also Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Expedition Supervisors and/or Expedition Assessors up to the top Gold Award status, which is of great benefit to Pegasus & other Explorer units in the district and also helps develop our younger sections.

Scouts are a National operator for the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme, hence, within our District we offer an alternative to undertaking the award through Schools & colleges etc. as many already do. This is open to Explorers and other members (i.e. Scout Network and other Adults/Leaders in the 18-25 age range). It also contributes to the Higher Awards (i.e. the Chief Scout & Queens Scout Awards).

Some advantages of undertaking via scouts include

  • Continuity (no need to transfer your record between providers)
  • Cost (no need for outside resources to support Expeditions as many schools need, scouts have over 100 years of doing this!)
  • Alongside like minded people (it’s a natural progression that fits alongside our other activities, not a one-off)
