Uniform, Kit & Equipment

To set expectations, certain activities might need specific items to be either comfortable and/or safe.

We are a uniformed organisation, hence the appropriate uniform (top only, plus smart trousers if required) will be needed for everyone. Badges would need to be sewn on (see location diagrams) & group neckerchiefs/scarves worn to most meetings & events. As a minimum, neckers should normally be worn if uniform isn’t otherwise required for the activity/event, where Identity is still needed. Other items of uniform/scout branded clothing are also available, but not an essential cost.

Depending on the Activities being undertaken, certain items of clothing and/or equipment will probably be needed at some stage.

Although there’s a limited number of spares available (good cast off kit is often welcome – kids grow!), please expect that attendance on some activities might require specific items, for example….

  • WATERPROOF top (with attached hood) & trousers….. not just snow or shower proof! An hour or so in driving rain on an exposed hillside is nothing like a bit of rain whilst out shopping in town. NB. Other special walking gear is not always essential, a lot of normal clothing can also be used, , however jeans & cotton items tend to get wet/cold so not good!
  • Walking boots (& good socks) – These don’t need to cost a fortune, but essential for more ambitious walks & activities. Boots with good grip & ideally a waterproof top (which is OK till the puddle is deeper!) – but most of all, comfortable. Good socks can make a big difference to fit, comfort & warmth, even if wet.
  • A daysack for walks/lager bag for camps (duffle bags/holdalls more suited for some)
  • Sleeping bag (3-4 season should normally suffice) & sleeping mat. Other personal camping kit (plate/mug/KFS, washing kit etc) does not need to be anything special.

Specific advice for each event can be given.
